Very good
This is a hidden hotel near the Nijo-Eki. We liked the traditional lodging style (shared kitchen and bathroom), but the bathroom light turns off automatically after 1 or 2 minutes. I think it helps if the lights stayed longer. Other than that, this was a great stay.
The room and the rest of the facility was very nice and clean. The host was nice and recommended us a local annual festival which we loved. Note to other visitors - there's no possibility to lock the room (this isn't a negative point as we expected this)
This was my third time to Osaka in four years and second time staying near Nijo Castle. Bifuku Roujiya is located in a quiet neighborhood and is well-managed by staff that are located in a similar ryokan about 10 meters across the lane. There is also a covered arcade market about 100 meters away, making it easy to get food and buy groceries. The house itself is a bit old and you can see the traditional elements of yesteryears, which present a kind of charm. My only complaint was the relentless mosquitoes which gave me an itchiness I have never experienced before. Be sure to bring mozzie repellent (I went in September)! There are bikes available for rental by the owner (reasonably priced) and I would highly recommend this mode of travel in Kyoto. It's the best way of seeing the city at all hours, especially when the subway has closed. Would stay here again, perhaps with a larger group so that we can take up both floors and have house all to ourselves.
This place is located really convenient, in my opinion, and has everything individual traveller needs (like kettle, plates, stove). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any towels and mattress was a bit far from been clean but everything else was pretty fine.

“decent living experience for this price”
Remember that it is a Machiya type of accommodation, meaning that the theme they are targeting is "traditional Kyoto housing experiences. There will not be any guests or room service, and it was indeed as expected throughout the 9 days of our stay. There are no clothes hangers provided, the room door can not be locked, and the soundproofing does not exist. It is wise to keep quiet after 9 pm. Clothes Washer and Dryer is located next to the bathroom and the washroom. There will be a 500 yen charge per wash, but drying is free of charge. The building is a bit hard to locate on Google Maps and in reality, but you will get used to it relatively quickly. Public transport is 7 minutes away from the hotel, and also you are in Japan, so bus and train schedules is nothing you have to worry about.
