“My best hotel experience in Japan”

This was by far the best hotel experience I’ve ever had. The room was spacious, spotless, and incredibly comfortable. The hot springs were the perfect way to unwind after long days of travel. The staff were exceptionally kind and helpful. My partner is coeliac, and they went above and beyond to provide delicious, gluten-free meals with great care and attention. Both breakfast and dinner were outstanding—flavorful, beautifully presented, and excellent value for money. You’d definitely be missing out if you skipped them. They also offer a different kimono for guests to wear each day, adding a special touch of authentic Japanese culture to the experience. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in traditional style, this is the place to go. I’m truly grateful for such a wonderful stay, and my partner and I will absolutely be returning!

    “Interesting and memorable stay”

We stayed at the Ryoso Chatani in Ohara for 1 night. Stayed from 12 May to 13 May 2025 in a tatami room for 2. The Ryoso Chatani was a beautiful and cheerful inn and felt like a nice family owed business. Cleanliness : All rooms and amenities were clean. While the restrooms are shared, they are well kept and clean. Osen is available for males and females in two different rooms. Decor: A really exquisitely styled inn. The owner's efforts really shines through with classy flower displays and traditional ryoken artifacts. There was a detailed samurai costume on display at the entrance. Comfort : The owners provided comfortable futon and we slept really well. Food: The Ryoso Chatani is situated in a rustic neighborhood. Hence, we ordered food (dinner and breakfast) The dinner and breakfast were impressive and delicious. The owners specially prepared vegetarian dinners and breakfast for my wife. They even stayed and served, cooking the steamboat Shabu Shabu for us. It was very endearing and felt like our own aunt and uncle cooking for us. They can speak English moderately well. Value for money? : Yes, for the rate we paid, stay, dinner and breakfast, it was amazing. The owners also lent us two bicycles to explore the countryside and we visited shrines. Should you stay here? The Ryoso Chatani is a one and a half hour bus ride from Kyoto bus station. If you are good with rides, I do highly recommend this ryokan. It is a refreshing experience from all major label hotels and you are supporting a small medium sized business (in the world of hospitality) When travelling out into the country side, please tread carefully and not to hurt the many creatures and insects that run across the forest paths.

    “Good experience to STAY HERE!”

If you come to Japan to understand their culture, you must stay at this hotel. You will be experienced to sleep tatami, eat local food and etc. The room is very clean and the host very nice. They will use translator to communicate with you and explain to you passionately. Even though it’s take 2 hours for me to travel from Kyoto station travel to the hotel for one night stay, I didn’t feel regret to stay here. I regret not to stay two nights. Also, you can use the Onsen for shower. Morever, they provide bike for you to explore the small town after your check out.

    “Very surprised!”

At first, I thought it was just a Japanese inn, located near Ohara Station. Although it's not far from the station, Ohara is actually an hour's drive from Kyoto city. We arrived at nightfall, and a kind elderly lady warmly welcomed us. Her English was hard to understand, but she tried very hard to explain. I know a little Japanese, so we completed the check-in smoothly. The hot pot dinner was very satisfying, and the bathroom was quite nice, with various toiletries provided. The bath temperature was very high, which was very comfortable. Although the room's sound insulation wasn't great, there was no noise, only the sounds of nature. The bedding was also very comfortable, and the beautiful yukata had a distinct Japanese style. The room provided hot water for making tea, and there was cold water in the bathroom to quench thirst. The breakfast service was also excellent, and they even lent us bicycles to explore the area. I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting to visit Ohara.

    “A very enjoyable two-night stay”

I stayed in a simple, clean tatami room with good aircon. (Bring an eye mask if you don't want to be woken up by the sun at 5:30 a.m. as there are shoji screens on the windows.) The shared, small bath was also clean. Bathing is not fancy, so don't think you will be getting an onsen experience, but there are all the facilities you need including yukata, a hair straightener and massage chairs! The couple who run the guesthouse are extremely nice. I had booked a double room even though I was a single traveller and the woman was concerned that I was wasting money as there were no cheaper single rooms she could put me in. (In Japan, you usually pay per person unlike per room in Western countries.) Anyway, It wasn't a problem for me as I had made the booking knowing that. However, as I had not booked meals, she very kindly offered to provide dinner and breakfast at no extra cost. That is certainly amazing service! The meals were huge and very good. The affable gentleman who also runs the place was busy serving breakfast at 8 a.m. and still cleaning the baths at 12 am. He certainly works very hard. There are bikes you can borrow to have a look around the area but you can walk to the main attractions in 20 minutes. I was able to leave my bag for a few hours after check out. I live in Japan and was impressed so I'm sure that foreign guests would find the place very charming. I don't think much English was spoken, but it seemed the main messages were being understood between the owners and non-Japanese speaking guests.
