Where to stay in Kandy District
Kandy District hotels & accommodations

I’ve been unhappy with Kandy hotels so far until my stay at Ozo. It’s up the road from the lakefront, and has a lovely relaxed look and feel to it. I enjoyed both lunch and dinner there, and the buffet breakfast was generous and tasty. The staff are impeccably trained, and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. I hope this hotel keeps up its standards. For now i...

Majestic Hotel in kandy city centre. Good location to stay near shopping n food area. Loved the views from the room n restaurants. Mountain view. Nice pool n gym. Staff were polite n frenly. Should privide toothbrushes n toothpaste as part of toiletries but was given upon request. Good breakfast. One lift only if i am not wrong. Waiting time a little longer.

I visited Sri Lanka for a short period, after staying in Amaya for one day, decided to stay longer, seeing the excellent service they provided. Staff was very friendly, I felt like home. Food was exceptional with a variety of choices. Walking tracks around the mountain leading to the top of Hantana was an excellent experience with picturesque views. Inside the hote...

We thoroughly enjoyed 6 nights in Kandy and our choice of Hotel made our stay VERY special. The facilities, the ambiance, the quality of food, the friendly staff, and the views were SUPER. We also appreciated the Live Entertainment each evening. Being visitors from Australia we enjoyed seeing the Sri Lankan Weddings that were taking place in the Hotel. Our stay in this...

I will eventually buy a house on the outskirts of Kandy in the hill country where it is even cooler, this is where I went to on this visit! I stayed in the Yala National Park at a fabulous hotel called the Yale Park Hotel. Absolutely amazing place with infinity pools outside all of the rooms. The rooms without exception were all massive and really well thought out. A ...

Stayed at this Kandy City Hotel for 1 night during a recent holiday trip to Sri Lanka. It is a new hotel and has just been in operations for a few days when we stayed there. Everything is still new and even our room had a fresh smell of paint when we first entered it. Locationwise, it is located at the heart of Kandy City, so it offers close proximity to the lake, ...

The Elephant Stables is a beautiful boutique hotel, tucked away in the area surrounding Kandy - about 7km out of the main town. A small place with maybe 10 rooms, all tastefully decorated and comfortably homelike. Beautiful gardens and pool area. Limited menu choices - but don't let that put you off! The curry option for evening meal brings 10 sumptuous curries, gene...

My wife and myself spent 2 nights (19 and 20 June 2015)at the Mahaweli Reach Hotel. From the time we step out of the vehicle we were greeted with a smiling and pleasant face with clasped hands og greeting. The check in was breeze and the officers manning the counter ever happy to assist. We were shown to our room within minutes by a trainee officer (I think her name wa...

Overall good experience. But not exceptional. Food was ok. No much selection even it's served as buffet. Stayed in standard room. They have no tooth brushes or toothpaste in bathroom. So do not forget to bring your own. Also they provide only 2 water bottles for 22 hours. Next day if you ask for water, you have to pay for that. That is frustrating for 4 star hotel. Pe...

We had wonderful time at Swiss Residence Kandy. Peaceful place and easy access to the hotel and very short distance to Kandy city. The parking is good and security guards are helpful to park vehicles. Welcoming is good with welcome drink. The room quality is excellent and way better than we expected. This is by far the best hotel in kandy, western standerd rooms and service, hard to get at Sri Lanka in general, the manager bought us train tickets a month ahead of our visit, it was the last tickets at that date, as he spent 3000 from his own money to get us this tickets and without that our journey would fall apart as we were dreaming about this train ride, then upgr...

the hotel is a little distance from the centre of town, perhaps a ten minute journey by car or three-wheeler due to traffic, a twenty minute walk around the lake. this distance is rather a bonus for the hotel and provides a sense of calm and much needed peace and quiet after the bustle and noise of central kandy. the views over the lake from the majority of rooms are e...

We really enjoyed our stay here in Kandy and a part of this was staying at 360 View. Its clean, homely and welcoming. Newly built and all facilities are top class! We would definitely stay here again if we return to Kandy. The roof top pool and observation deck are just the icing on the cake!!

Our first night in Sri Lanka was spent at this little hotel on the hill...a totally unassuming enterprise, until you wake up in the morning and hear the birds outside, open the balcony doors and you are struck by an awesome view of the Mahawali river meandering down below, against the green lush backdrop of the opposing forest. On the river, slowly moving fishing boats...

This is a perfect, central base to explore Kandy. The hotel is perfectly located around 5 mins from the temple of the tooth and the heart of Kandy. The hotel overlooks the lake and is set in a prime location. It is directly on a road but you soon get over that very quickly. There were also some roadworks right outside but this is Kandy and is he really very busy and ...

Literally one of the best places we have ever stayed. The location is not in the town centre however it's only a short tuk-tuk ride away and the view you get of of the valley and the town from the hotel is incredible (far better than it would be in the town itself) as this place is basically up the hill overlooking kandy in all it's beauty. The room was beautiful and c...

The Mountbatten was the first hotel on our journey in Sri Lanka, and the perfect place to be for exploring the temples of Kandy and also finding time to chill by the pool with the incredible views of the hills. The hotel stuff are friendly. The boss is friendly and helpful too. He helped me to amend my bookings accordingly as i had booked more days than i required initially. He also revised my booking cost accordingly. The breakfast provided by the hotel is very generous, based on the amount we paid for. It is really value for money. The hotel has lift which is ideal for elde...

I can't say enough good things about Theva. Having lived in Kandy for 3 months several years ago, I can say confidently that this is the BEST hotel in Kandy town and great value for money. The staff is exceptional from Deeshana the owner, Russell the manager, all the way down to the hotel staff. They have built a family around this hotel and it shows in every employee....
Cheap places to stay in Kandy District

This new Hostel is a perfekt stay if you want to see Kandy but want to have a quite surrounding. The family is amazing hospitallity and they will arrange everything you want or need. the breakfast is always fresh and good and you will have it in a nice familyatmosphere. the bus to town is just 10 rupees and a supermarket and restaurants area close by. thank you for th...

the location is good, ten minutes walk to the town center, lakeside and Daladamaligava( the temple of the tooth)., yet in a very silent place, best place for backpackers and solo travelers who are on the budget.the owner is a nice honest guy, small place dont expect too much. the climb to the accommodation is a little stiff. its not for family traveller, highly recomen...

I came for 3 days and have spent another 5... And I am not here for the last time. Excellent place especially for a photographer, close to the centre of Kandy (7 minutes by public bus) and kind and helpful family. In fact is a homestay... Highly recommended!

We got instantly picked up after arrival at Kandy station by the owner himself. Turned out he has 1,2,3 stories to tell about the city, area and his country, to put it short: a very communicative and helpful guy (as well as his staff). He insisted on approaching him if we have any wishes or concerns. Our room was simple but effective, a good place to rest and recharge ...

We booked this place for our trip to Kandy. It's a little ways off (500 rupees for the tuk-tuk trip from Kandy City) but you're guaranteed peace and quiet and a very relaxing stay. Restaurants are quite a ways off, so if you want to eat at the house, make sure you do a take out. Alternatively, the grocery is about a 5-minute walk, so you can buy food and use the kitche...

The hotel itself is very basic, but adequate. It is a good value place to stay for those on a budget, relatively close to Kandy cente with good wifi. The main selling point about this guest house is the owner, Herbert. After our stay, I realised I had left something in our room. Herbert was incredibly helpful on the phone, and even agreed to ensure it would be waiting ...

The best facilities... Nearest bus stop is 10 min. walk away. Bus station and railway station are at 10 min. drive away... Facilities are of word class standards... Clean and neat environment. They don't even allow your footwear inside. 24 hrs check in and 24hrs check out. They provide kitchen if you like to cook on your own. I have kept my luggage there for two days a...

The room was fine for a basic room. It was about a 20 minute walk from the main Kandy attractions. The main guy working there was a bit weird and made me uncomfortable. When we arrived he was really pushy about getting us to go on their tour even after we told him we already had one organised. He also made a disapproving comment about my boyfriend and I not being marri...

The accomodation is pretty new (2017). living room/dining room and balcony are luxery and guest room pretty basic but the bathroom is special. there were some cables coming out of the wall, i dont know what they were for. the guest rooms are next to owners room. the owners are super friendly. unfortunately there is no menue list for food and drinks they offer. its eas...

I was very happy about staying here. I just booked one night but extended to two nights. It has a great placement, not in the middle of Kandy, but it only takes 10-15 minutes (a bit up the hill - but that just counts as a nice little butt-workout. Or else the tuk-tuk drivers will happily bring you there!) and then you would be in the middle of the city or back at the ...

Comfortable bed, walkable if wanted from the city center otherwise a short trip with tuk-tuk, clean rooms and bathroom although share with quite many others. And breakfast included, which makes it more practical and worth the price! The staff will also help you out regarding plans in Kandy, order taxi, help with directions and recommendations, etcetera.

The perfect location to stay whilst in Kandy. A short 5min tuk tuk ride from downtown Kandy. Purchased on the top of a hill in a leafy suburban area. This location gives visitors to Kandy an oasis to retreat from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kandy, after spending the day sightseeing or shopping. Great location, only a short tuk tuk to the best bars and restaurants...

The staff was amazing. Plus the service. It was brilliant. Since the day we checked in until we checked out the service we received was super perfect. The best benefit is the hotels situated at the centre of the Kandy city its a great privilege for the travellers who can find and visit all the places so easily. And the rooftop restaurant was so peaceful and calm where...

you have a really stunning view down to kandy. The family is very kind and is always happy to help. A tuk tuk from the train station to the accommodation costs around 300 rupees. The breakfast is easy but good. The owner served tee as a welcome drink. I would definitely stay again at this nice and small homestay.

The facilities are quite good but are let down by amateur staff. When I arrived my reservation (which I had a printout of) was treated with scepticism because the guy at the front desk had never heard of Agoda (his English was also very poor). Instead of talking to me about it, he saw a phone number I had written down in pen on the corner of my trip notes and just call...

Clock Inn Kandy is the perfect place to explore Kandy: the hostel is very clean and comfy, the staff is very friendly and helpful if you need of any help, the location is great to explore around... And they even have a great coffee at the reception if you are a coffee lover! I really enjoyed my stay at Clock Inn and extended for a few more nights. I definitely recommen...

Alex and his wife are wonderful host, very friendly and helpful.. Alex can arrange tours for you, in and around Kandy at best prices. The food was delicious, they give importance to your comfort and not just money!! Derick, recommmeded by Alex, drove us for tours to Sigiriya and Nuwera Eliya, he was the most friendly guide we have ever had.. Overall, a pleasant stay ...

Ajantha and his family made me feel so welcome. They helped me arrange tours and served delicious breakfast and dinner upon request. The rooms are extremely clean and spacious. The common area and balcony are fantastic and have beautiful views. The location is great! Put of the hustle and bustle of the city, but close enough to walk down at any time. I definitely recom...

if you're looking for a budget hotel in kandy, this hotel may be considered. it gives good value for your money but don't forget to bring your own towels! free wifi, a quite generous breakfast is included and there is a nice view over kandy from the dining area on the top floor.

We sent in Kandy 2 days. Really intensive days:) Nature is quite far from the center so you need to take tuk tuk to reach there. The hosts (couple who live there and take care of the house) are incredible friendly and helpful. They organised one day trip for us around Kandy. It was raining all the time so we were really happy that we could travel in tuk tuk:) Room was ...

Just a few minutes walk down a lane to the corner of Kandy Lake. Rooms spacious, if in need of renovation, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. My only negative point is that not only is there no bottled water supplied but they charge double the price of the supermarket.

Room was neat&cosy, and there's living room, kitchen, and balcony (great view!) for the guests. Hosts were really kind. They invited us for a tea time with deserts (it was the girl's birthday). Was little awkward, but enjoyed it! lol :). Had a great time!

Such a lovely hostel. The staff are so friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to make your stay great. The view from the balcony is beautiful and is away from the hustle and bustle of Kandy. Easy bus or tuk tuk ride to city center. Breakfast is cheap and filling. Facilities are clean and comfortable.

Loved the staff who made our stay a very happy one. From Hiram the front office manager to Ruwan , the bell Boy and Anura my floor house keeping manager and staff were excellent. This is the perfect place to stay in this World Heritage city - a heritage hotel with tons of 'colonial charm' and right on the Lake in the centre of Kandy. Very comfortable beds. T...

We loved this hotel, right in central Kandy, can walk everywhere from it, the hotel has real character and is a period building, it was very clean staff couldn't do enough for you, they brought us a kettle and when it didn't work another, we had dinner in the bar, the food was good and average price, breakfast included in our stay, was cooked to order with fresh orange...

My experience of this hotel and its staff has been the best. Pleasant hotel set in a quiet street away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kandy, but still in walking distance to the shops and restaurants. The staff were absolutely phenomenal! Booked this hotel based on the photos and information mentioned in Agoda and to see when we reached the hotel it was nothing as mentioned in Agoda. The Delux triple as mentioned in Agoda did not have one queen bed and a single bed. Neither was it close to the photos published in Agoda for Delux triple. However the staff were very friendly and helpful and managed to mak...

Me and my Sister stayed here in June for 4 nights. When we arrived we discovered we were the only occupants in the hotel due to the recent events in Sri Lanka. The staff made us feel incredibly welcome right from the beginning and could not do enough for us. The room was absolutely beautiful, very clean and stunning views. We did write the names down of the two members...

Dr Nimal and his wife were just superb. Our huge room with views was spotless and our hosts were attentive to all our needs and gave us excellent advice, even procuring the impossible -to - get reserved train seats! Lilith, the tuk tuk driver was on hand to take us wherever, whenever.

Not having been to Kandy before we discovered that the Resort was 28km outside. The view and the chalet were perfect for a quiet stay.It took 45 minutes by tuk tuk to get in to Kandy. The restaurant and food were really good, the staff attentative but always with a smile.Kandy is really busy with traffic so it was great to return to the peace & quiet of the resort. The ...

It is visible that it is an older hotel but they are making some repairs. Not right in the center but almost near to the temple in Kandy. A bit hard to find it for the first time but then it is OK. You can see a herd of monkeys directly front of your door in the mornings. So do not forget to close the doors and be ready with the camera. :-)

Sweet Cinnamon Guest House is a hidden oasis a few miles outside of the bustle of Kandy center. The rooms are elegant and inviting. We stayed the first 5 nights in one of their “simpler” rooms, which we thought was lovely. Upon returning to Kandy and again booking with them, we stayed in a room that blew the first away. The custom bathroom had huge windows that looked ...

We stayed in Ashburnham in August for two nights and came away feeling we had a healthy dose of the tea plantation life for not too expensive. Our room, the family suite, was huge, with a separate living room and large bathroom. Furnishings were nice enough, and the staff keep things clean and tidy, though there was a somewhat worn feel, most notably the swimming pool,...

The Tamarind Lodge is a beautiful hotel nestled in the hills of Digana near Kandy. While the hotel is a distance from Kandy, its worth the trip for the views. This hotel is highly recommended for those, including families, looking for some peace and quiet in a mountain setting. We have stayed at several large hotels throughout Sri Lanka for the past 6 weeks and this Boutique Hotel is by far the best. The road around Kandy is tricky and it was difficult to find Kandy House, definitely need additional signs on the road with phone numbers. The landlord family is very welcoming and kind. The house was great, but breakfast was very very poor - tiny omelet, little bread with some fruits place and and 3-in-1 Nescafe cup. Had to go to breakfast in another places.

We were looking for a high end, boutique hotel with outstanding customer service. We got all of this. We only stayed a couple of days and this was about R&R - if you're looking for something lively this isn't for you but if you are looking for somewhere to relax, read a book and enjoy fantastic customer service then this is the place

More about Kandy District
Discovering the Enchantment of Kandy Sri Lanka
Kandy, the second-largest city in Sri Lanka, is a mesmerizing destination that captivates visitors with its unique blend of cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. Nestled in the lush hills of the Central Province, Kandy is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, making it a must-visit spot for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation. The city is steeped in history, with its roots tracing back to the ancient kingdom of Sri Lanka. Walking through the streets of Kandy, one can feel the echoes of the past, with colonial architecture standing alongside traditional Sri Lankan structures.
The crown jewel of Kandy is undoubtedly the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses the sacred tooth of the Buddha. This temple is not just a religious site but a significant cultural landmark that attracts pilgrims and tourists alike. The intricate architecture, adorned with beautiful frescoes and carvings, offers a glimpse into the rich artistic traditions of the region. Beyond its cultural significance, Kandy is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, with lush tea plantations, serene lakes, and misty mountains that create a picturesque backdrop for any traveler.
As the sun sets, Kandy transforms into a vibrant hub of activity. The city comes alive with traditional music, dance performances, and bustling markets where visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture. Whether you're exploring the vibrant streets, enjoying a cup of Ceylon tea, or participating in local festivals, Kandy promises an enchanting experience that will linger in your memory long after your visit.
Top Reasons to Experience Kandy
Kandy is a treasure trove of experiences that cater to every type of traveler. One of the top reasons to visit is its rich historical significance. The city was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese kings and is home to numerous historical sites that tell the story of Sri Lanka's past. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a focal point, but other sites like the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue and the Ceylon Tea Museum also offer fascinating insights into the country's heritage.
Nature lovers will find Kandy equally appealing. The city is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including the Udawattekele Sanctuary, a lush forest reserve that provides a peaceful escape from the urban hustle. The Alagalla Mountain Range offers thrilling hiking opportunities, allowing adventurers to explore the breathtaking vistas and diverse flora and fauna. For those seeking a more leisurely experience, the picturesque Kandy Lake is perfect for a tranquil stroll or a relaxing boat ride.
Cultural experiences abound in Kandy, making it a vibrant hub for lovers of art and tradition. Visitors can enjoy traditional dance performances, participate in local festivals, and even take part in an interactive batik workshop. The city’s lively markets are perfect for picking up unique souvenirs and local crafts, ensuring that you leave with a piece of Kandy to cherish. From its rich history to its stunning natural beauty, Kandy is a destination that truly has something for everyone.
When to Explore Kandy for the Best Experience
The best time to visit Kandy is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to April. During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The famous Kandy Esala Perahera, a grand procession that celebrates the sacred tooth relic, takes place in July or August and attracts thousands of visitors each year. This vibrant festival showcases traditional dancers, drummers, and beautifully decorated elephants, offering a unique cultural experience that should not be missed.
Another great time to explore Kandy is during the cooler months of May to November. Although this period sees occasional rain, the lush greenery and vibrant flora make the landscapes even more breathtaking. The cooler temperatures provide a comfortable environment for hiking and exploring the surrounding nature reserves. Additionally, the quieter atmosphere during these months allows for a more intimate experience of the city’s attractions.
Travelers should also consider local holidays and festivals when planning their visit. Events like the Kandy Perahera and the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April bring a lively spirit to the city, with colorful celebrations and local customs on display. To make the most of your trip, check the local calendar for events that align with your travel dates, ensuring a memorable experience in Kandy.
Essential Travel Tips for Kandy Adventures
When visiting Kandy, it’s helpful to familiarize yourself with local customs and etiquette. Sri Lankans are known for their hospitality, and a warm smile goes a long way. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites, such as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, where covering shoulders and knees is required. Additionally, removing shoes and hats before entering these sacred spaces is a sign of respect.
Language can be a barrier, but English is widely spoken in Kandy, especially in tourist areas. Learning a few basic phrases in Sinhala or Tamil can enhance your interactions with locals and show appreciation for their culture. Simple greetings like “Ayubowan” (Hello) and “Thank you” (Istuti) will surely be appreciated.
Safety is paramount while exploring Kandy. The city is generally safe for tourists, but it's wise to stay vigilant and keep an eye on personal belongings, especially in crowded areas. Utilize reputable transportation options, such as tuk-tuks or taxis, and always agree on a fare before starting your journey. Lastly, staying hydrated and using sunscreen is essential, as the tropical sun can be quite intense, especially during midday.
