We are a Swiss family of 5 currently living in India and wanted to enjoy a break-out to recover. We were very positively surprised about the Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort in all aspects. We enjoyed a lot the great infrastructure of the resort in combination with the wide range of activities as well as the many opportunities nearby such as safaris or turtles watching live at the beach. Our holidays were made very special by the hotel team from the day of arrival at the Colombo airport until the departure. The service quality was outstanding. Also, we enjoyed Sri Lanka as a holiday destination. A very special thank you goes to the crew of the flying trapeze. They teached us knee-hangs, flip backs and knee drops, which all our family members from 3 to above 40 years old enjoyed greatly. Also a huge compliment to the kids club crew. The hotel has a very professional manager who took excellently care of us and stayed in contact through out our stay and beyond.

Super cozy place, great yoga lessons, great food. we had all in all about 10 hotels during our sri lanka stay: this was the best one! book the full food as there is no restaurant near tallala (but you dont need one) btw: notice that it is not easy to find places for dinner as in thailand or vietnam. most restaurants are for rich tourists and serve lame food, singhalese restaurants close early

We stayed 5 nights in a beach bungalow (originally we booked three nights but extended our stay). There are five bungalows placed approx. 50 meters from the beach and the hotel restaurant. Fine bed with mosquito net and air con, nice big bathroom and a fridge. Beautiful view from the veranda. Only a short walk from restaurants if you don't want to eat at the Villa Tangalle restaurant. We found that to be the best choice after having tried several others. The staff was absolutely amazing! Kind, happy and helpful. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place with not many other tourists - this is the place. The lagoon offers a great variety of animal life - peacocks, colourful birds, varans, mongoose etc. We loved it and can only give it our very best recommendations! We want to go back!

I had very low expectations before coming to this resort because of its reviews. But everything changed and they made it an amazing and exceptional long weekend stay for us. In the beginning there were some very bad impression. I e-mailed them and requested a early check in with a balcony and a bath tub. Upon arrival only they told me that higher floor rooms don't have a bath tub. They could have informed me in one of their reply e-mails which they didn't. So when we arrived, they took 2 hours to get ready the duluxe room 304. So the thin lady at the reception who was wearing a saree nicely tricked us by saying Sir come here and took us for lunch which we didn't request we were under the impression that it was a complimentary lunch for their 2 hour delay cleaning room number 304. But No! I had to pay for the expenive lunch! The menu had limited options and their Sri Lankan rice and curry is the most expensive rice and curry i ever had and only was with rice and some fish curries that's all. No veggies no any other choices. It wasn't worth the price at all. Now I understand why most reviews said don't go for half board. Then when we got the room finally after 2 hours later. The room 304 was superb. Very spacious and very clean. The bath tub was large. It was a beautiful room. But the blinds doesn't go with the room's theme. They should replace it for some nice curtains. This place is in Ranna so there is no decent restaurants nearby. We had to travel 18km to Tangalle for Lunch and Dinner. The roads from Ranna to the actual resort is a mess please do something about it. Anyway, the actual experience of the 4 star resort lived up to its name. We noticed as soon as we go out of the resort they quickly clean the room that was very kind of them. We were welcomed by the fruit plater they left in our room. Eva Lanka Hotel is located on a small hill in a very large and beautiful tropical garden just above small sandy beach. We were lucky enough to book the ocen view chalet with a magnificient view of the sea and sunrise every morning. Rooms are bit dated, but very clean and everything was working fine. There are about 30 rooms, but the garden is so large that you rarely meet any other guests, it is a very quiet place, perfect to relax. Once this hotel gets renovated the price would be doubled if not higher. So do go there now as this place is a real gem! We booked Eva Lanka hotel because I wanted to try the all inclusive ayurveda treatment and due to last minute booking, all ayurvedic resorts in the area were already fullly booked. Luckily for us as this place has an unforgettable location with excellent service. You receive the treatments in the middle of the garden, all you hear is just birds and the sea otherwise just peace and tranquillity. The price for ayurvedic treatment is very reasonable (compared to other resorts) and the price/quality ratio is perfect. The therapists are great, knowledgeable, always nice and smiling. The same must be said about all members of the staff, all of them are very nice, welcoming, always smiling and helpful! There are 2 small private sandy beaches, only guests of the hotel go there. There is a buffet breakfast and buffet dinner every day, the quality of food was fine, choice ok. I had a special ayurvedic diet so they prepared special meals just for me, I felt like a VIP as a personal waiter was always serving the food for me with an explanation of what I was eating! The only negative thing was the price of a la carte menu and drinks which were quoted in USD and price were significantly higher than in other hotels. Overall, it was an amazing stay and I can only recommend it!

My partner and I stayed here for 4 nights. Upon arrival we were given the pool "suite" - this room is On the ground floor next to the pool, not open like the photos suggest and evidently not advertised as such on any booking site or the hotel website. We were very grateful to be moved to room 7 - the room actually pictured in the photos - and loved the room. The social area on the top of the building is lovely and a great place to sit and read a book if you wish to stay out of the sun. The food was nice - it's a shame that they don't have Sri Lankan breakfast on offer, only western. We ate dinner there a couple of times but the prices really are too high when there is a perfectly good restaurant on the beach just a 5 minute walk away. For example, the hotel were offering 500g of bbq fish for 1800 LKR when you can get a whole 800g fish for 1300 and eat on the beach... Otherwise we very much enjoyed our stay and highly recommend doing the morning yoga or a spa treatment at Talalla.

Beautiful hotel off the crowds. The Lankavatara is situated directly at a lonely beach. It’s perfect if you want to relax for a few days. The interior style is great and everything is clean and new. However, it’s location also means that there are no restaurants and shops close. by. The hotel therefore offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food is good, there are a lot western options available, but it’s also more pricey (5-10€ a dish and twice as high for drinks as Sri Lankan standard.) Nevertheless staff was kind and helped us organizing transport. All in all we really enjoyed our stay, especially Long Beach walks.

We loved our seaside cabana on Goyamboka beach. A slice of paradise with a simple authenticity that’s hard to beat. The ocean is beautiful and the lush garden surrounds were idyllic for a relaxing getaway from the crowds. There are peacocks and iguanas in the gardens and stunning stars to view at night. Breakfast and dinner at the main and poolside restaurants were some of the best we’ve had. Delicious hoppers and curry to start our day and tasty curry varieties at night. We hired a scooter one day for a zip around to neighbouring beaches near Dickwella but otherwise explored locally on foot. Swimming in the sea was divine, but can be a little rough at this time of year for novice swimmers. The beachside huts selling food and drink were tasty and good value, but they appear to be burying rubbish deep in the sand, which strong waves revealed. If this practice continues, this will certainly destroy the beauty of the area and impact sea life.

my family and i just returned from our first trip to sri lanka. in total we spend 11 days there and we stayed our last three nights in beautiful maya. we booked the two rooms in the ‘old house’ for our two daughters and ourselves. the accommodations are just beautiful. the décor is so well done and the attention to detail is amazing. four poster beds, period furniture and fans, fantastic bed and bath linens, etc. made this a super luxury boutique hotel. the bathroom amenities were out of this world and beautifully scented and better than many a 5 star luxury hotel. no tv but who needs one in such a setting! airconditioning during night time only was also no problem for us as the fans provided sufficient relief during the day. the attention to detail throughout the hotel is just amazing. as a ‘fussy’ hotelier i look hard to find areas for improvement during the various stays in hotels throughout the world. however the rooms and facilities in maya were just amazing and faultless. you can see the hotel is owned – and designed – by an interior designer and my compliments to niki fairchild who must have painstakingly restored this beautiful colonial house. the verandah/lounge in the old house was our after dinner hangout for a good cigar and bottle of wine. great choice of music to choose from and a large selection of books made this the perfect place to review the day and wish the holiday would never come to an end. the hotel is so wonderful that we hardly ventured outside. mr. perera and his team were most accommodating and kind and did their utmost to interact with us and made sure our stay was a pleasant one. our daughters played ‘cricket’ for the first time in their lives and the maya team helped them explain the rules of the game and acted as ‘bowlers’ and ‘fielding team’. we had the feeling of having the entire hotel to ourselves as the grounds are large enough to accommodate the guests of this 5 room hotel.

We booked this hotel just for one night, but had lived it in six days. If you are looking for a place to relax away from the noise and partying, this hotel is for you. We were with two children and it was our best vacation for the last few years. Fantastically beautiful and empty beach - we spent on it all day without seeing anyone. Very clean and large rooms, great views of the ocean from the terrace and from rooms, nice pool, very friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant is located right on the beach, the chef prepares not only what is stated on the menu, but takes into account all your wishes. Very tasty and very large portions. We will plan to return to this hotel with our friends at Christmas.

Hotel, gardens and room were beautiful and very clean and well-maintained. Great location 2 mins from beach, shame about the busy road you have to cross but can’t be helped. Pool was gorgeous and plenty of sun loungers etc. Breakfasts were pretty much the most expensive out of everywhere we’d stayed in Sri Lanka and nothing special. Stay also tainted a bit by being told on arrival that the hotel was fully booked (AKA double booked) on the last night of our stay so we’d need to go to one of the other beach hotels instead free of charge. After stating we didn’t want to do this, it was left open-ended/unclear with manager so we were unsure whether they were expecting us to leave or not... in the end was fine however and we enjoyed the stay!

First of all: there is NO sea view room. Somehow you can book it.... hotel is directly at the beach Hotel is actually under construction / renovated but it will be one of the best hotels in the next years in this area A chinese investor bought the old structure and renovated it in chinese quality... but for ceylon standard it's very good. The organisation of the service is not mellow because of the New staff

This is a beautiful little resort with lovely rooms finished to a very high standard. The rooms are incredibly clean, with a safe, a fridge and lots of hot water! The pool is beautiful and cleaned daily. The restaurant serves very good food and the breakfast was by far the best we had in Sri Lanka (fresh fruit, toast and a variety of options- it is a la carte, as opposed to buffet) The hotel were happy to organize tuk tuks! The only slight downside (although may be a positive for some) is that there is nothing within walking distance. There are no little restaurants or bars on the beach and nothing else around. The best touch was that they were happy to serve meals on your balcony (for breakfast, lunch or dinner) with no additional charge. The staff worked very hard and provided a great service!

We loved everything about Esperanza. Probably best beach in srilanka to wind down, relax and enjoy the surfing with the feel of owning the beach, not many souls around. The small hotel is beautifully decorated and rooms are super comfy. Only con is the small breakfast that we had compared to other hotels during our trip and smallish portions for expensive but wonderful menu. The manager was extremely helpful. We would have loved to stay longer.

The Hotel is located on the Marokkolliya beach in Tangalle. The Marokkoliya beach is on of the most pristine and unspoilt beaches in Sri Lanka. If you are looking for a truly relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life or the stress of work .. this is the place. Even though the sea is most of the time too rough to for swimming or bathing .. this is an ideal place to relax and have a beer under the shade with the strong breeze in your face. The hotel it self is very nicely built, the deluxe rooms were quite nice, large and very clean. It did seem that it was newly built, and we did see a quite a bit of construction still going on.. One drawback was that the room did not have a telephone, which was bit of an inconvenience. If you are the more adventurous type, you can try out the cabana on the beach...although it is separated from the hotel via the lagoon and seemed perilously close to the sea, it would be a the ideal place to relax..... Don’t forget to try out the Jacuzzi on the infinity pool. If it’s not turned on ask the pool attendant to turn it on for you. If you are lucky to get a superior deluxe room, you can have your own private Jacuzzi !!!. The food was average. The breakfast was mostly local food and the spread was small, but if you do enjoy Sri Lankan food it’s more than adequate. If not you can order a l a carte. On the negative side, the hotel can improve on its management and its overall service levels . Make sure that you call the hotel to reconfirm your booking if you doing it via an online site such as Agoda.com. The hotel would do well to complete the ongoing construction and open up to the public as soon as possible… especially the bar located on the beach. In summary, this hotel and its location is real value for money and highly recommended.

We booked the room in the new building with the sea and glad that we did it. This is a family run hotel that has two buildings, the old and the new one. The old building, facing the road and the small town was out of consideration for us. Our credo is that for the beach vacation we need to be on the beach. The room was cleaned every other day and the towels have been replaced. And the bed sheets have been changed on the 4th day. All that was OK with us – do you really change your bed sheets at home every other day? Manori, the daughter of the owners, is the angel who made our vacation so enjoyable. She was arranging the vegetation food for us – something new every day and so delicious! Manori addressed all our questions or concerns, and every guest at hotel was graced with her beautiful smile. The price of the vegetarian food, laundry service, the car to the airport is comparable with the other places in the area. Since we have arrived at the end of December, the majority of the WiFi traffic was already used by the other guests, therefore no free WiFi at that point. Later, during the first week of January, the WiFi was OK, no complains. The beach is the main reason why we have decided to return to Dickwella once again, we have not been disappointed. So, if you like a quiet family vacation away from the bar scene – this is a place for you.

We've booked two nights on short notice and knowing the usual performance of hotels in this price range, we did not expect too much, although the review comments on Agoda were great. However, we were really surprised what nice hotel this was. From the very beginning welcome drink to the check out - everything was nice and okay. The price performance is very good and if you know the best places at the beach then you have won with this hotel. Clean, friendly, good food, nice surrounding nature and as usual in Tangalle amazing beaches (however, not in front of the hotel but in walking distance). This was the first time in Sir Lanka that I did not have to fight for my rights or to get money back or to complain about basic issues. The manager knows how to do his job. We're definitely going back again.

We spent 5 days at Mangrove during our 2 week travels around Sri Lanka and I can't begin to describe how amazing it was! Unfortunately something happened with our booking via Agoda and they had only booked us for 3 days, the team at Mangrove organised our stay and didn't cause any problems, we stayed 4 days in a cabana and 1 in a chalet, which was perfect. Where to start...the beach was paradise, the sea was too rough in front of the cabana, however within a 3 minute walk was an area which had a rock pool, perfect for cooling down! The beach bar for lunch was excellent and breakfast and dinner was always great, absolutely no complaints what so ever. We spent 5 days in total relaxation. As a couple, my partner preferred the cabana, however I preferred the chalet, which was wildlife free! The only thing which slightly scared us were the chants over a loud speaker one morning at 5/6 AM, but we quickly got used to it. I couldn't recommend this place enough! :-) wonderful experience and the staff couldn't have been more helpful, arranging all of our trips and transport.

Not much more to say than has already been said. Until the rooms become enclosed, I highly recommend reserving an a/c room if you plan to get some quality rest on your holiday. Not for the coolness, although it was quite hot when we stayed, but because the dogs here are basically nocturnal. They sleep all day and party all night. Ear plugs are a necessity. Besides that and the high prices comparatively, our stay was very nice. Yoga accommodated all levels and, while the beach and surf are quite crowded, there's something for everyone. If you're looking for a hidden spot away from the tourist crowds, there are many beach villas closer to or on Tangalle beach that would fit the bill. The managers/owners and staff are very friendly and care a great deal about your experience. Food is tasty and good quality, although you pay well for it. I was siked about the outdoor shower under the stars, but as it turns out, it's not very private and you will have to draw the bamboo curtain to bathe.

We booked online in the UK prior to our trip and we were not disappointed. The location of the hotel is a 200m walk to the beach which I have to say has been the best beach for fun we have found. We hired body boards for an hour and enjoyed the surf. We stayed in the older part of the hotel and it was lovely, all facilities worked, bed was comfy and we would definetly stay again. I must mention how helpful and friendly the young male staff were especially Dimul. If you feel adventurous, if you exit the hotel and turn left go up the road then up the hill you can walk into the local village, where although their is a language difference, a big smile and wave goes a long way. Wonderful 3 days.

We loved our stay at Green Garden Cabanas. The place was clean and comfortable with lovely staff who made our stay even more enjoyable. We had a basic non-ac room but it was perfect for the two days we stayed. The only negatives are that there were lots of bugs in the evening at the restaurant area due to the location, but they were doing their best to ward these off with incense and, due to the length of the beach, we were unable to walk and needed to rely on tuktuks. Really great place for the reasonable price and would recommend to anyone.

Stayed here for 4 nights and we absolutely loved it. Hotel is in a quiet, secluded location with 2 pools, a garden area and access to a deserted beach. The room was nicely decorated and overlooked the sea with a balcony, the bed was huge! Bathroom was a good size and clean with toiletries provided. There is a terrace area downstairs where food is served - the food was delicious, best curry we had in Sri Lanka! There is also a spa area where we both had a relaxing massage. The hotel manager was very knowledgeable with activities in the area, and organised everything for us. What really makes this hotel is the staff - they were very accommodating and friendly, doing everything with a smile. This hotel is perfect if you want a few relaxing days in luxury - would love to go back!

The Ibis is about a 10min walk to where the restaurants and drinking spots are, so as a solo traveler it wasn't the ideal location. However the rest of the guests were couples, and this is the perfect spot for them, with a private beach with cabana's and deck chairs. The food is great, if a little over priced - but most of the food in Tangalle is more expensive. The only problem I really had was the very poor wifi, but again, I think this is a Tangalle wide problem as I tried some of the wifi in some restaurants and it was equally unusable. So I'd highly recommend this hotel if you're after some beach going alone time with her partner.

This hotel is fabulous ! The staff welcoming and ever so pleasant, as that comes from the top where the manager Iris, runs the place with great efficiency. I called the night before we arrived, as I had a few questions before I booked, and spoke with Lucky. We kept getting cut off and Lucky took the time to call me back repeatedly to ensure all my questions were addressed... Unheard of in this country! He even came in early for his shift the next day to greet us and knowing the trip was for my husband's birthday, had arranged an upgrade to an amazing room with it's own pool. We booked for two nights and stayed for five! Thank you UTMT for a memorable stay! The reason I didn't give the food many stars, is we only ate there one meal as we tend to eat in the small local towns. Found the food a bit pricey but that's not a real issue, just our choice to try other venues. If you get a chance, stay in this immaculate gorgeous hotel run by Iris and her wonderful staff!
