Eastern Cape Province hotels & places to stay

Spent two nights there. The hotel staff at reception and in the dining room and the security staff at the entrance are charming and gracious. East London and the Eastern Cape are in a tight economic situation and this is reflected in the hotel where they are trying new ways of charging for services. For example, in the dining room breakfast is served 'a la carte' and one is charged per item ordered.

The accommodation was first class, spacious, clean and very comfortable. The staff friendly and helpful. The game drivers friendly and informative. Everything is very well organised. Because the lodge is in an open space all sorts of animals can wander through, therefore, in the evening when it is dark, you must be escorted to and from your lodge. The food was excellent. You are given a choice of menu in the afternoon before the game drive and your meal is ready on your return. When you return from the game drive, hot flannels and a drink await you. My only small comment is everything is very formal in the dining area. During our stay there were lots of couples and all the tables were set up to accommodate each couple. Everybody spoke in hushed tones. I felt very uncomfortable with the silence. At other safari lodges, smaller tables are available but there are also larger tables so that you can chat to people befriended on your game drive. It's more social and less formal.

The spa was excellent. He rooms were large, with a comfortable king bed and an amazing shower and bath combo. The rooms and hotel were kept clean throughout ur stay. The area felt very safe to walk around at all times of the day and night. (Pleased to see only a few electric/barbed fences in this area). Unfortunately the spas location leaves it quite a distance from any positive attraction apart from De Kelder (the best restaurant so far in South Africa). The BoardWalk is around 15-20 minutes walk away and then it's a further 10-15 minutes to the Humewood restaurants, which is more the layout of PE rather than the hotels shortcomings. The restaurant at Isango is hit and miss. Dinner the first night was delicious and well presented. Room service the following night and then dinner on our final night were both less than satisfactory. (Perhaps a different chef). Staff were also very friendly, however there never seemed to be a bartender available for drinks by the pool and when calling reception at night or early mornings there were times when no one answered.

I have been in the hospitality industry for almost 20 years. In the last 5 of these years my family and I have traveled to many lodges, hotels, resorts, spa's and back packers enjoying life, well trying to anyways. To often, actually almost 90% of the time we are disappointed. Being Lilizela award runner ups and winners my wife and I pride ourselves on service and expect the same everywhere we go. On arriving cold wet and miserable, just the atmosphere of this hidden gem perked up our spirits. Staff were warm welcoming and although the room we booked was not available due to a hickup with maintenance issues, this was not a problem as we were upgraded to a magnificent unit. Nothing was to much to ask from this phenomenally run Lodge / resort. The food, second to non, honestly you have to eat it to believe it. Accommodation is quaint simple practical, not luxury but a home away from home. Staff were incredible. 100% recommended.

Lovely spacious room and bathroom with tea/coffee station and bathroom accessories like shampoo, soap, shower cap and body lotion. Air con was noisy in our room and we asked for a sea-facing room which had a lovely view over the harbour but the noise from traffic and road below!!! I'll definitely stay again but will request a back facing room with no view, but I would rather have a good night's sleep. A very nice hotel, clean, impression of open space and very pleasant staff at reception. We got a very good rate through agoda

I have just returned from a three night stay at the City Lodge Port Elizabeth, whilst attending the SA Society of Aaesthesiologists annual congress. Everything was fantastic with real value for money. Location is really a five minute walk to the Boardwalk Hotel and Conference Centre. Rooms are clean, comfortable and well appointed. Service is very good. This is like a mini five star hotel without the five star prices. Only thing is the breakfast is expesive at R165 but the spread is very good. Still, there is only so much one can eat, and R165 is expensive, when you can get restaurant breakfasts across the road for less than half the price.

We stayed at Pumba for two nights at the beginning of October... I only wish it could have been longer!!!!! After researching game reserves for many weeks I am so glad that I choose Pumba!! The water lodge we stayed in was amazing, the view of the lake unbelievable and the animal encounters on the game drives where unforgettable! The experience is just such a dream, it hardly seems real!! All the staff are friendly and kind, especially the ladies who clean the rooms, they really go above and beyond! The food was amazing and my partner is fussy and he never found it difficult to choose a meal that he would like. Food and drink was of a very high standard. You get what you pay for after all and I am so glad we choose Pumba for our eastern cape safari! And experience that we will never forget! Thank you

Everything was amazing from the beginning, you are so warmly welcomed by staff and glorious views. The little things are done here, there are only a handful of lodges so it feels like you get 100% attention from the staff. My girlfriend is a vegan and the chef (who was crazy is a great way) come out of her way to speak to her and let her know her thoughts for her menu selection and had a few options for her. Her food was so good even I loved it and I'm a proper meat head. I went down to the wine cellar to pick my own wine, which was great. We originally thought this price was quite high (as we also book all the extra safaris and 4 course dinner) but it was by far the best value for money.

my wife and me were on our honeymoon in south africa (capetown to port eliz via garden route). i must say woodall country house is the best accommodation in the entire trip. the house was just awesome. beautifully furnished. the restaurant is overlooking a pond where birds, swans are. lovely view when u having breakfast. oh and breakfast is truely a spread. for jams alone, there are more than 20 over types to choose. and alot of them are made in house! oh did i mention the fantastic hospitality woodall's staff and the owner showed us. we would definitely go back again.

A local hotel in a good location in a residential area.easy access to airport & downtown.Property built 1899 & has 8 rooms.Rooms have names ,no numbers.A relaxing /tranquil property with a pool,garden,restaurant,WiFi is free/reliable/quick.Rooms are huge with different styles.Complimentary water/tea/coffee.Some rooms have balcony..There is a desk/tv etc.Bathrooms are large with seperate shower/claw foot bath/Table.Restaurant is small but excellent breakfast(hot items ordered from menu card.Light lunches can be had.Diiner is excellent with a wine list.Food presentation is upmarket cuisineFinally staff are fantastic take care of guests .There are 2 lounges with sofas to read/relax.Must return for a world apart unique experience

No 5 is a hotel located in a quiet street 5 minutes from seafront in Port Elizabeth. It is an absolutely stunning hotel with the most beautiful rooms. It is art deco themed and stuffed with fantastic furniture pieces and amazing works of art. We stayed in the suites situated across the road and we were absolutely delighted with the spacious, luxurious accommodation. We also had dinner and breakfast there, both of which were delightful. Highly recommended.

The best thing about the place was the staff, Gloria and Randell , Both New at thier work had been exceptional. They went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and had been so accommodating that we felt they were part of our family. (I have stayed in many hotels round the world which we cannot compare to as this was a lodge / B&B type place) , however the service we received were beyond 5 star which even the best hotels could not compare to. I honestly wish I could have Randel and Gloria as my personal home helpers

Fantastic. Both Wendy and Chris are so helpful and friendly. The place is beautifully furnished and really felt like a home from home. The pool is a great size and lovely to relax by even if you don't want to swim. The Hotel is close to the airport but we heard no noise at all. It is also a 5 minute walk from a beautiful beach. We would not hesitate to recommend Manor 38 and wish we had booked to stay longer.

From A like Awesome Area with the garden and the love rooms, D like Delicious Dinner & Breakfast, F like Fresh Flowers every day in our awesome & beautiful room and everywhere else in the hotel, L like Lovely Laughter (like Charlene), P like Plenty cool Poolsessions, S like Super-excellent Service and many many many more. Not a single thing to complain. Ok, just one, I missed a full body mirror in the room, but honestly, this was not really a complain. We couldn't be happier to spent our honymoon there, I would like to come back, immediately! We recommend to take more than 3 nights to enjoy the awesome pool and nice surrounding. We were always the only ones at the pool because we split all of our activities on more days, That was so relaxed. It is just a little hotel but that is the best way for us to travel, you will feel magnificient.

We loved our game drives at kuzuko lodge. The rangers and staff were all helpful and friendly. The cottage is modern and comfortable with everything you need. Food is excellent and children were fully catered for. breAkfast was fantastic and set us up for the day. The only critism is the long drive on dirt tracks to get to kuzuko, it felt like we were driving forever. On arrival we were given hot towels And hot chocolate so we were happy. High tea is at 2pm so make sure you get there before then on your arrival day. The first game drive is at 3pm till 6pm. Go ... You will not be disappointed! Highly recommended

i book this at the last minute and we decide to go for addo elephant park mainly because of malaria free zone. we cannot do wrong with "relais et chateaux" chain. i'm very glad that we did and it worth all the penny spend. - price: zad per person sharing room (ouch!!!) - location: private reseve within addo elephant park - staff: super freindly and helpfull - room: luxurious tent without electric fence (so at night you need to be accompanied by the staff to get to your room) - food: excellent with exotic meat (ostich, eland, springbok...). the choices are differents each of our 3 nights/days. wine are not include. it is not expensive, but at the high price that we pay, i expect this should be included! - hotel features: swimming pool (too cold in spring to swim), wifi (only in lobby. this is too bad. they should put it in the main building so we can enjoy the scenery or not at all so we can to be completely isolated from our internet dependence disorder) - safari-guide: very relax and knowing well the animals, birds and the finbos... - animals: the big 4 only (plenty elephants, plenty buffalos, few black rhino, few lions). no panther. recommanded: yes tip: 1- arrive early around 11:30 am and leave late... 2- 2 nights are probably enough 3- best period late september, october and november as well as april and may for lower price (i prefer spring due to the "finbos flowers that can be seen in the park) 4- tips for staff and guide: 1000-1500 zad should be enough.

Located right on the rivers edge and within walking distance of all the great restaurants Unfortunately the hotel did not have the room available that we had booked ( due to a water leak ) but managed to find us alternative rooms Staff were friendly and helpful Not quite sure of it should still be rated a 4 * - but still excellent value. Wifi was temperamental at best!

Found Carslogie House excellent. Spacious, beautifully-appointed room with every comfort - great bed, TV, ironing board, tea-coffee, mini-fridge, wifi. Bathroom also spacious and spotless. Lovely, clean swimming pool outside your door. And breakfasts that will keep you going all day - must be best omelettes in SA! Christine, Kerry, Love and the everyone there all so friendly and welcoming. Five stars.

We stayed in the Presidential Suite, which was enormous, with a large, private terrace and jacuzzi. It was a beautiful room, with views over both the coast and hills. There are large fold-back doors, giving the best of the views and the breeze. The hotel is tastefully decorated and very comfortable. We were also delighted that there are no predators, so you can walk or cycle around everywhere. We stayed for 2 nights and had a wonderful time. Owners and staff were great too... nothing too much trouble! Thank you for a perfect break.
