not bad
Cons are how they close from 11am -4pm so you can’t even access your room/bags or drop bags off before check in.
Location is convenient to take a bus.
just so so
nice staff with good english, you can ask everything about kyoto to staff. he's very helpful nice experience cause the house itself is so japanese with thin wall, it's just awesome experience for me. clean shower room, good wifi... couldn't ask for more
Overall it's very clean, but as its typical Japanese old style house, quite noisy if your room is closer to public area. However, location is super convenient, can reach some landmarks and Kyoto center by walking.
Good location, nice staff, the house is very clean.
Provided great value and location is not far from Gion street. House rule was for all occupants to vacate during cleaning hours 11am - 3pm. Remember to smile when checking in. Taiwanese staff member is enthusiastic.
Location and facility are good.
PROS - The best thing about this place is it is so convenient. You walk to Yasuka temple, kiyomizu-dera, maruyama park (one of Kyoto's biggest gardens) and you can walk through many "alleys" (instead of the main street) for traditional-looking shops, most beautiful at night where you can even spot geishas and maikos. It's close to Gion, which is bustling with many shops, restaurants and temples plus a subway station. And it's a 3 minute walk from the bus stop. There's a list of places you can go with helpful bus info too, and a map of good restaurants around (including Okutan for the tofu dishes and Tsujiri main store!). - the lounge is pretty nice - there's books and a big flat screen TV people sometimes watch the news or sports on, and it's very conducive to meeting people (I met tons!) BUT it closes at 11pm and you get kicked out by the manager who murmurs "sorry for the inconvenience" with an annoyed, sarcastic expression. (more on him later) CONS - Dirty. The first bed I slept on was in the girl's room (8 people), and had blood stains on it, gross lol. Nothing I can't handle, I just spread the sheets on top of it. There was dust and garbage in the gap between my bunk bed and the wall (a pretty big gap, dunno why). And this is not their fault, but people's clothes and bags littered everywhere on the floor. No lockers of course, and not really much space to put your luggage in the rooms. The second bed I slept on was in the mixed dorm (12 people I think) and it was cleaner but a lot noisier. They also forgot to give me sheets so I had to ask for it. Washrooms are generally alright, the fan is super dusty and gross to look at and there's hair in it sometimes. I mean, 3 showers for the entire place is not very many. Sometimes I'd have to wait but it's not so bad. They also have hairdryers, yay, but you can use them only up till 11pm due to the thin walls. I had to use it once at midnight but because of the rule I headed to bed with wet hair and, surpri
We came in early to leave our baggages. The location is not easy to find. When we arrive the host asked us to come back later. when we arrive around 10pm , he voiced with sarcasm and demand extra money for expecting host to await for check in which is inappropriate and stated that it is the house rules and it is in the website. THe worst case is I have arranged for my SIM card to be sent to this guest house and the host has denied having receiving it and upon checking with the SIM operator , the host has received and tell lies . Do not stay in this FAKE HOST GUEST HOUSE. the house rules is also very unfriendly , if you wanna take a nap in the afternoon, the house rules stated the cleaning session is the whole day session after noon hence you are only using the place for 6 hours. This is the worst ryokan guesthouse I have ever stayed in . FAKE SMILE indeed.
Pleasantly, a great place to stay. If only the check-in time could be earlier. Otherwise it's a been a wonderful experience.
The location is very good. With the bus 206 it is not far from Kyoto Station. And you do not have to walk far for the many things to see in Gion. The place is nice an thr owner friendly and helpful. The only thing is that the curtains in front of the beds could be thicker to create more privacy. And the coffee and tea is not for free.
The hotel is very near bus stop. It's easy to travel around the city. The environment is very clean and it's Japanese style house. I like the lovely front yard in the house. The space for each person is big and comfortable. The owner is very patient and kind. He tried his best to help me and offered me a lot information. It's really nice to meet the owner and staffs. It's the place that I want to back and to recommend friends.
Quiet area near to attractions, if that's what you're looking for. Noisy guests can be a problem in a Japanese style house (paper walls).
This is a great place to stay in Kyoto. The price is decent, and the staff is very friendly. The room is clean and very traditional. The wall is quite thin so if you plan to be loud, then it is not a good place to be. I love staying here with my family. It is really peaceful.
Best price for budget travelers. Easy access to every attractions. The guesthouse is comfortable and the manager is also quite helpful.
good guesthouse in a reasonable price
It's great to have a social area in lantern, people can easily make friends. The host is nice. However, at night it would be a little bit noisy if there are insensitive tourists living there. If u have high demand on sleeping environment then lantern might not be a very good choice.
We had a private ensuite. Room does not come with towels, you'll need to pay for them. The toilet is tiny though. More suitable for backpackers than for couples.
They provided good, comfort and value for money rooms. But,I found its a bit hard to find the hotel location. Even the taxi drivers refused to take us there,as they have no idea where the address locate. The staff can speak English well. It's suitable for backpackers, youngster groups and solo traveler.
This was a great place to crash for the night. Extremely clean inc toilet, shower and comon areas. Located in Gion - a little difficult to find initially but turned out to be a great location to explore kyoto. Night staff ( Yo, i think) was very friendly and helpful
Was a great stay and with simple but full equipped facilities
The bed is not so comfortable. There should have been more privacy which could be done easily via bed curtain and stronger bed light. Current setting (No bed curtain and weak bed light) makes it very hard to do you own things in the time where light is closed which is long (11pm-9am) which make it hard for me since I tend to leave the place early and without the setting, that's quite hard.
It was perfect. My bed was ready and Yo was more than willing to help me throughout my stay with the places where I wanted to go or have breakfast at. I love the interior. Definitely will come back if I return to Kyoto.
Beautiful old building, was glad I got a look inside. Sound travelled very very very well, people didn't always respect this so spent the hours 2200 to 0000 listening to some dumb conversation in the next room from my bed.
It would be great if I could stay in facility all day long if I have to. They close from 11AM to 4PM. No one allows to be in the facility due to cleaning. If I know this ahead of time I wouldn't choose it.
Thumbs up! Recommended
I used the dormitory room, clean, simple and effective. The owner is jolly, helpfull, and maintains his guest house to an impeccable clean state. He is keen to help you organise trips and on top he can rent you (electric) bikes, which is essential if you want to move efficiently through Kyoto.
Everything in this hostel is fine. But the boss (manager) of this new hostel is totally within a bad/ unprofessional service attitude. The guest cannot use the kitchen is also another wierd thing for a hostel. Anyway, the hostel wrote "Prepare your smile, otherwise you cannot come inside." After the process of discrimination and inappropriate behavior of the boss, it looks so sarcasm and aukard of this new hostel anyway. I would not recommend Asia backpackers for this hostel.
Like stay at home. Clean and near the shopping center. Short distance by walk to the major attraction.
I travelled together with a friend and had no place to stay in Kyoto. Luckily we found a guesthouse through this site which made our stay in the city so much better! The guesthouse was so new they didn't even have a proper sign outside, but that "problem" is no more. When we entered inside (a few hours early) our host Takeshi-san met us up with a bright smile. With my not so overly amazing skills in japanese I made myself understood and we could leave our luggage and come back later and walk around in Gion while waiting to check in. When we got back we had a small tour in the house and met a lot of interesting people! The host can speak and understand english, but it was more fun trying to speak with him and some of the others in japanese. Tl;dr - Great guesthouse!
I definitely will not recommend this hostel. The Japanese receptionest has very bad service attitude, and the way he speaks is very sarcastic. It is unbelievable that this could be seen in the service industry in Japan! This is the worst service I have ever seen during my decade of travelling experience worldwide. Though it was expected of poor facilities, shared bathroom, no towel provided, but we were shocked with no housekeeping service provided and all guests were not allowed to stay in the room from 11am to 4pm. The overall living experience is very disappointing and it will definitely ruin your happy holiday mood.

a very good experience for old style house in kyoto!
