I’ve traveled to Nuwara Eliya many times over my life. I’ve stayed at the Hill Club, various other hotels, the golf club, planters bungalows. I understand that the nostalgic appeal to the colonial era is part of what motivates people to visit the town, and arguably part of its charm. The grand hotel turns that into a kind of unfortunate parody. The check in process seems sweet, with tea delivered to you in the sitting room, but it’s very time-consuming. Check in staff seem to call at random times during the day, mostly when we’re taking naps, to check on how we’re enjoying our stay. That sort of unsolicited check in is very weird. There are staff everywhere, but only some of them are actually there to help. Others seem to just stand around. Mysteriously a bunch of the front desk staff don’t speak English very well, which is in general OK, but at a hotel that cost this much is not. The place plays like a sort of sponsored fantasy of colonial times, complete with sometimes mediocre sometimes good food. Our breakfast tea tasted like it had been made with water from a coffee machine. In Sri Lanka this is unfortunate; in Nuwara Eliya it’s inexcusable. We ate at the hotel’s Indian restaurant, which is just down the road a little, and the food was quite bland. The service there was excellent though. The good: Our conversations with the Hotel naturalist went very well, and he seems like a very competent and pleasant person. The pick up from the train station was well arranged. And the pool is nice. Most of all you can’t beat the physical structure of the place. It’s very impressive and situated an excellent location. It’s very quiet, and the rooms are comfortable. Many of the staff were very pleasant.

Probably one of the best hotels in Anuradhapura, it offered a delicious array of Sri Lankan and Western cuisines for both dinner and breakfast. The view overlooking the pool was simply stunning, and the pool itself was clean and inviting, perfect for a refreshing dip. Additionally, the hotel's proximity to the 18-hole year 1889 Nuwara Eliya Golf Course was a highlight for me and my 14-year-old son. We ventured to the course, discovering that the green fees for foreigners amount to around Rs 24,000 for 18 holes, plus Rs 5,000 for club hire. It's worth noting that the caddies, who provide invaluable assistance on the course, deserve recognition and a tip. We made sure to tip them at least Rs 3,000 each—they truly deserve it for their service. When it comes to dining, The Grand's buffet breakfast offers a delightful variety of Sri Lankan and continental food, ensuring a satisfying start to the day. The Thai restaurant is also a good option for dinner, but insist on hot food. For other dining options, we ventured to the Glendower Hotel, where we indulged in some fantastic "Indian Chinese" cuisine—a unique and delicious culinary experience. However, we found that the bar at The Grand, while offering a good selection of small single malts, was a bit pricey. It's worth noting that they serve 50ml pours rather than the more standard 30ml, so be prepared for a slightly larger pour when ordering your drink. As an Airbnb host myself, I understand the complexities of guest satisfaction, and I must commend The Grand for flawlessly meeting all our needs and expectations. Kudos to the staff for crafting a true hidden gem amidst the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and tea estates.

A personal touch and super friendly staff made our stay memorable. A beautiful colonial style hotel portraying the old-world charm. Hygienic, cozy comfortable rooms with well-manicured gardens and the overall feel was wonderful. The buffet breakfast and the signature cocktails well worth a taste! Beautifully crafted desserts, delectable foods to suit all palates was in abundance. A definite visit back to the hotel on our next vacation to Sri Lanka is something to look forward to.
