Where to stay in Gion
Gion hotels & accommodations
Hotel is in the perfect location on a quiet side street in Gion. Hotel is modern, efficient and incredibly spotless. The Onsen - separate for men and women - is a nice touch, especially when traveling in colder weather months. Seamless check-in and check-out, friendly staff, warm interiors. Some room types are small and very compact, yet efficiently designed. Stayed fo...
PROS: - extremely friendly, helpful, multilingual, efficient staff/owner (She was so sweet!) - gorgeous house - nice facilities - excellent location - less than 10 mins’ walk to Gion area CONS: - glass-panelled sliding doors on single room allowed in light from sensor lights every time another guest walked around the house - other guests somewhat disregarded the ni...
My wife and I traveled to Kyoto from Osaka. We took the Hankyu Line over JR because the terminal stop at Kawaramachi was just a 10-minute walk to the hotel in Gion, near the Yasaka Shrine. This was the perfect location for us as we explored the eastern side of Kyoto from the Ginkakuji to Kiyomizu and further south to Byodo-in and Fushimi Inari. The hotel room was small...
The staff is very helpful and friendly. The location is very good you can go walk to gion yasaka shrine or shijo dori just a few minutes. There’s also a bus stop and subway station near the hotel. The room is big. I booked the family room for 4 people but i think its enough for 6 or more. I’m very recommend you to book this hotel if you go to kyoto
I just finished staying four nights at Laon Inn Gion Nawate in early February 2019. My stay was perfect! First off, the location is fantastic, just a couple minutes down the road from Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Line. You're also in easy walking distance to Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Railway and all the shopping and nightlife nearby. As the hotel is in Gio...
We booked this ryokan relatively last minute and as a group of three, we were very satisfied with our stay. The room was very clean and spacious and we had a great view looking over the garden. The ryokan is located near several attractions such as the Philosopher’s Path and Eikando Temple. There is also a bus station nearby so you can get to Gion and other parts of th...
The place is easy to find. Just follow the instructions in the map the staff will give you. The only downside is that the booking office is at a different place. It's near the JR station in central Kyoto and the hotel is at Higashiyama near Gion.. but still the place is still awesome. It's very clean and the place is peaceful. Walking distance to Gion and some shopping...
We loved our peaceful and elegant stay at Gion Hatanaka. The cuisine was outstanding; interesting, beautifully presented, and wonderfully served in our room. Yes, there are rules regarding timing of meals, but we did not find this to be a problem. We loved the Japanese breakfasts. We booked a dinner one evening with Maiko, which was quite expensive, but a fun experienc...
Our stay in The Westin Miyako Kyoto Hotel was perfect. If you're not looking to stay in a Ryokan and would like to have a comfortable conventional western hotel to stay in Kyoto, i would highly recommend this one. Although it's a little pricey, the service is perfect and the comfort you get is definitely worth is especially if you spent the whole day walking and explor...
Perched beside a temple in the Gion district, this Ryokan is hidden behind a rocky wall with only a mysterious small door that leads a stony climb. A great Ryokan in Gion, with a very good traditional breakfast offering. The views in the some of the rooms can be a little lacklustre but the Ryokan and it's atrium garden is wonderful.
Interior is exact to photos. Location is impressive. A few mins walk to Gion Tatsumi Bridge. Nearest station: Sanjo Keihan & Gion Shijo Station. Love their detailed touch on pyjamas, skin care, face masks, cable extension, converters, accessories organizer, Dyson fan & hair-dryer. Space considered very big compared to other hotel in Japan. The staffs are very helpfu...
We stayed 1 night at Ryokan Gion Sano, but I wish we could've stayed longer. The staff were incredibly friendly and nice. The location was great (just south of Yasaka Shrine and Gion St.), maybe 10min walk from the 206 Bus line stop. The hotel was in a quiet location, and had a nice garden entrance. It is run by I assume a husband/wife team, and while they are very at...
We had a really good 3 days here in Kyoto. Though a little bit of a walk from Gion-Shijo and Kawaramuchi stations, the location was excellent smack dab in the middle of gion, you can walk to nishiki market etc from here as well. The surrounding alleys here makes you feel like you’ve been transported into a whole new time period. The ryokan itself had very warm and frie...
We had a western style room (they also have Japanese style rooms with futons), very spacious and comfortable. Many temples and shrines and beautiful gardens to see in this traditional, old-Japan neighborhood . Everywhere you look, beauty! The Maifukan staff was excellent, everybody pleasant and very helpful, with good English speaking skills. A lovely Japanese style...
This hotel is small without many facilities and therefore seems pretty expensive for what you get. The room was lovely though, really spacious and the staff were courteous and welcoming. The location is perfect, right in the heart of Gion and very close to the station for travelling to other sights. Exactly what we needed for our stay.
This is a relatively new hotel, so everything is new and clean . They provide great amenities, the shower is to die for! Breakfast is simple but good. The hotel is walking distance from Gion, Pontocho, and the takashimaya area. There is a great bicycle rental place nearby, really recommend it (get the electric assisted one), good way to explore the city without having...
Self contained new, with lovely traditional features, accommodation in walking distance to Gion restaurants and sights.
The location is very convenient since it is already in the historical streets of Gion. The place is very clean, the shower is small and you have to constantly press the button in order for the shower to operate. But it doesn't matter since everything works well and you have enough room space for changing your clothes. The toilets also have a separate room from the show...
I had a great time here. The hotel is situated right near many of Higashiyama's best attractions (the Municipal Art Museum, Ginkaku-ji, Philosophers Path, and any others) and semi-close to Southern Higashiyama and Gion. The room I stayed in was a cool japanese style room with a private bathroom. A cheap but yummy breakfast is served downstairs in the morning for a smal...
It was our first time staying at a Ryokan, and it happened to be the best one so far! Before we arrived at Ryokan Genhouin I was already anticipating the the famous Ryokan Hospitality, and we were not disappointed. The staff were incredibly friendly and even guided us around the place showing us the facilities that are available. The facilities and rooms were clean an...
I love Cafetel. Nothing else. Everything is kawaii just like in the photos. I love the details of the interior, informative way finding stickers, and complete amenities provided. Location is also very nice, just exit Sanjo Station and you’ll arrive. Would definitely recommend this to everyone💛
Hotel Staff especially Midori-san was very helpful. Kyoto hotels r unique. Commonly they hv staff during stipulated time for check-in/out. Luckily for us, Rinn Gion could keep our luggage as our departure flight was late at night. Their staff work inside a room, hence one would hv to knock on door for help. Rinn Gion Bishamon was a perfect hotel for us. It was in a v...
I can only say this villa is perfect. The design has a good balance of modern and traditional style. The whole villa is clean and new. The pool is the best thing I love. The staff are all very considerate. I would consider their other villa next time when I stay in Kyoto.
I had a great, (though short) stay here. It would be within 15 minutes walking distance to the shopping areas (Karawamachi area) but if you are taking the subway there, you may be a little confused about which Exit to take. I would recommend Exit 10 (closer to the Hotel) or if you want to get out at Book-off, Exit 9. I got a small package of sanitary goods from them (b...
i couldn't think of a better hotel to stay in if you want to experience the convenience of being in the heart of kyoto gion district with western comfort. i stayed in a single room for 4 nights for a very reasonable price. the room was surprisingly spacious for a japanese hotel standard with a big bathroom with a shower and a tub with jacuzzi. the staff were friendly a...
Good location, very close to Gion old village and Sanjo train station, family mart nearby, across the river you can find lots of restaurants and bars and open til late night. Also very close to Forever Museum of Contemporary Art where we had a chance to visit Yayoi Kusama’s artworks. Short walking distance to Gion shopping areas, Terramachi etc. The apartment is big e...
The garden room view is spacious and stunning. The staff speak fluent English. The location is perfect - very quiet, very peaceful and just a short walk from Gion, the bus, railway and subway stations. Lots of restaurants and convenience stores nearby. You will love walking around the hotel. I would definitely come back here again. They only have vegetables available...
地点有点难找,但非常靠近景点 非常舒服尤其是洗澡盆,设施也非常齐全,网路很顺,有机会还会再来
The family and their partner who operate the Shirakawa are cultured Kyoto people with background in the traditional arts and textile crafts. The rooms are small tatami quarters, and so require a bit of getting used to, with the futon changing and so on. The interior mini-garden adds a nice touch, and bathing facilities adequate. Bicycles can be rented at the desk, and ...
Cheap places to stay in Gion
less than 10sec away from subway exit. good location to asses Gion street. clean> nice place to have Japanese sake.

Great location! Close to subways and bus stops. We got Room 1 at first floor - Yugo was really helpful and got our luggage to the room (stairs). As it's on the main road, we can hear the traffic 24hours. Old style house so expect a bit of smell. There's lounge area with microwave, fridge, hot water dispenser, TV, sofa, dining table.
The hostel is easy to locate. Just 2min walk from Higashiyama subway station and 3min walk from Higashiyama Sanjo bus station. Located in the Furukawa shopping street. Walking distance to Gion and Karawamachi district. Staff are very friendly and helpful. My booking was 5nights stay in female dormitory however I was given 3 nights stay in their private room! Positive...
Guest House Kobako is located on a quiet alley close to many temples and nearby Gion. The 100 year old house has been lovingly restored by the hosts Aki and Yuki. It is a traditional Japanese home, beautiful in its simplicity. The tatami room we had was spacious and comfortable. The shared kitchen is perfect to make a cup of tea or coffee after a long day of sightsee...
This was probably the best hostel i have stayed and super good for the value of money. The hostel was a little hard to find initially, but its definitely worth the find. Its located away from the main street so you can expect quite environment. First of all, the staffs were very welcoming and friendly. They guided and provided few suggestions during my stay there. ...
Pros: * Room is really big compared to the hotels in Tokyo at the same price. * Located near Sanjo subway and easily walking distance to Gijon or to the other side of the bridge. * Washer and dryer within the room * Easy check in.
Excellent! We stayed for 1 night in February and I must say this was fantastic value. It is a small inn that looks to be family run but it is the perfect combination of traditional Japanese charm and modern amenities. The exterior is very zen looking and the treat is quiet and lined with beautiful traditional houses. The street itself is very quiet but it is a stones t...
Best stay ever in japan, felt like home.....treated like friends in the guest house eating n drinking celebrating jiro (boss dog) birthday.Great location opp there is a mini mart, across the street there is Kochi-in temple, nanzen-ji temple, Art museum, kyoto zoo. Exit the guest house turn left about 20 metres away there is a bus stop where u can get a bus down to Gion...

Initially had a difficulty of locating the apartment. It was just few minutes from Shijo Gion Station. This was literally in the heart of Gion Area. Near the Yasaka Shrine. Lots of buses to go around different shrines. The bed was comfortable. The staff was really nice. They woke up early to accommodate my early checkout.
Wish I could keep this place secret. It was fully booked when I stayed - for good reason. Staff speak adequate English and are very nice and helpful. Amazing kind friendly professional staff. Typical Japan. Capsule room is comfortable - on Japanese futon cotton bedding - and sleep rooms are non-smoking, clean and comfortable. Quiet except for snorers (maybe bring...

Thumbs up. This is a great budget hotel option in Kyoto, particularly if you get a good deal through Agoda. The hotel is older and not fancy, but has everything you need for having a fun stay in Kyoto. Check in is at 3pm and they didn't have the option of checking in early when I arrived around 1pm, however you can store your bags there early and if it's check in time ...
This is one of the best places I have ever stayed. If you have a chance to stay here, make a booking because the place is often booked out. Gion Koh is located in Gion, of course. There are lots of traditional buildings around and most of the sites are within walking distance. The center of town is about a 15 minute walk. The place itself is very traditional and looks ...

I spent 3 nights here. The hotel is about a 15 min walk to train station and 20 mins to Gion. Really comfortable big room. I did miss the fact that this hotel was for 18 yrs and over but it didn't really impact me, it seemed to be some kind of love hotel! The room also had a few extras like a gaming machine, jacuzzi, massage machine. All in all though, I enjoyed this...

The price is cheap, and you can meet friendly staff and many people from other countries. I don't think this hostel is to spend silent time by yourself. I stay there by myself and had great time with new friends. I'm sure that I will stay there next time.

Book and Bed is such a unique and quaint little place. Great for book-lovers and those who are looking something different. Staff are also very friendly and they have a nice map of non-touristy things to do in Kyoto. Was able to rent a bike from them as well! Location-wise, it's right across Gion and a stone's throw away from the subway station. 10/10 would recommend!

At the good location, not far to Gion and in a small street to sleep well, you will enjoy the free breakfast. But the best is still the staff, really helpful and always smiling.
The inn certainly just a walking distance from the subway station. Me & my sister really enjoy our stay even though just for 1 night. Both Taka & Yuka are super friendly, willing to assist us anytime. We won't forget the restaurant that Yuka suggested for omu rice. It was a great dinner. We will stay here again if we have the chance!
Rakuza is situated in the centre of the Geisha district, Gion, which also holds many festivals and is home to many great souvenir shops and shrines. Staff were good at English and very helpful - they will have a map for you to see what shops are around. I was here in winter and the heaters were great even though I have chronic bronchitis I wasn't even cold at all when ...
Location-wise, it is great, just within walking distance from Gion. The environment is quiet. My Japanese-style room was very spacious, which I think could house 3 persons (there were 3 sets of futon). Cleanliness was really average thought, and am disappointed as the bath was so-so only. Breakfast was also of average quality. Nothing to lose if it's not included. ...
The inn was walking distance to Gion Shijo Station, main shopping area such as Nishiki market, Takashimaya, etc. Bought the two days Keihan railway kyoto to osaka pass. Easy access to stations for your visit around Kyoto recommended area including Arashiyama. We took the Haruku train from Kansai airport to JR Kyoto from Kyoto station we took a taxi that cost us around ...

When we arrived at the hotel, the staffs greet us with smiles. Then they guided us to our room and show us the surrounding of the hotel. The second night when we returned to hotel, we are pleased to see that all our rooms had been cleaned. They changed the futons and put everything in the room back to their original position. In addition, there is a public bath a...
Totally recommended Ryokan very near of Gion main attractions. Advice!!!, request the dinner and at least one public bath. An amazing experience!!!!
We loved Kyoto so much because of this place. In fact, I think we spent equal time enjoying the house as we did the city. The cleaners coming every day was a great touch, as was the laundry and atrium. We really enjoyed watching the snow fall. The heat does not totally distribute through the house but we were never too cold.
I stayed in the most expensive room in the Ryokan. Yet, the much anticipated dinner turned a wee disappointment. much different from other ryokans. all very small portions, not "ryokan-class" dinner. The location, however, is nice. Facing greeneries, near sightseeing spots of Gion.
chose this hotel as it looks like a very pretty boutique hotel. however room was very small and bed is really terrible! very hard bed it’s like sleeping on the floor. one thing about holidays is restful sleep but this was a super big NO NO. so unless the hotel changes its mattress please reconsider booking. room did not have any mirror for me to do my makeup and when m...
Was our best accommodation in Japan! A bit expensive, but it was worth it! The hotel/ryokan was very near a very convenient station. The station was also at a very good location in Kyoto. Japanese breakfast seemed like a small serving, but it was actually very filling! No internet in the rooms, but there was Wi-Fi in the lobby. The room was very clean and looks very au...
We would have liked to stay in a ryokan, but with young kids it seemed impractical: this was a fantastic alternative. It was a short walk from the station (easy with luggage), and the pre-arranged instructions meant we could let ourselves in. There was even a phone provided in the house to contact the staff for check-in. The staff members arrived promptly, spoke excell...
Absolutely recommend it! An amazing hotel, in a renovated house in Higashiyama district, lovely neighborhood. The rooms had all the amenities possible and our room even faced an inner garden! Just fantastic!
Luxury hotels in Gion
It was my second and my parents' first time visiting Kyoto so I decided to give them a traditional Japanese ryokan experience. That's why we chose to stay at Yuzuya in Gion area. We stayed here for 2 nights with Japanese style breakfast, and had Kaiseki dinner in the evening of our second day in Kyoto. The food was so great and beautifully displayed when they were serv...

How can I describe this place. It was a mix of historical Japanese style house but with modern amenities! It was so classy well preserved and how the owner took such time to comb over each and every detail of the house. We felt so fortunate to stay here and when we come back. We will only ever stay here.
