“Best and value for money hostel in Gion”

The hostel is located in the heart of Gion, and walking distance to most famous Shrines, Yasaka Shrine, Kodai-ji temple, Kiyomizu-dear and iconic pagoda of Hokan-Ji. The staffs are friendly and a young Japanese lady who is fluent in English is extremely helpful (didn’t get her name). Check-in time is at 1500hrs, therefore there will not be any reception staff around before that time. The cleanliness of the hostel is good and saw the staff actively cleaned up the bathroom and futon bed after guest checked out. There will be only 3 shower rooms at level one and there is enough WC at level one and two for all guests to use. There will not be any locker for individual to place their luggage and luggage will be kept inside the bunk bed (enough space to put at least two cabin size luggage.) A drawer inside the bunk bed can be pad-locked to keep valuables. Common area has TV, kitchenware, fridge, tables for all guests to use. Initially, didn’t have too high expectation for the price paid and it turned out to a very pleasant stay for my 4 nights. This hostel deserves a thumbs-up. I will be staying again if I ever go Kyoto. “Great Ryokan in the heart of Charming Gion neighborhood”

This is my 4th time in Kyoto, just cannot get enough charm of the old charming world of it. And I always want to stay in Gion region because the houses here are all well preserved form Edo period. You can literally walk to Kiyomizu-dera temple and only 2 mins to Gion. I highly recommend you take a early morning walk or at night. When all tourists are gone, the streets become a magically place that you will never forget. The staff was super friendly and speak good English. The room was decent size with tatami, the heater is power to keep you warm in winter. The showers and toilets are shared with other guests. They have common area on 3rd floor which you can relax, read a book, drink some tea or place board games with your friends. 1st floor also got a common area you can eat, cook, making coffee. The Ryokan is clean, quiet, and safe. The door will be locked after 9pm, you need a passcode to get in.

    “I should've stayed longer”

First time to stay at a traditional ryokan so I can't say that this is the best but my experience was. Not a short walk from the nearest bus stop. I was so embarrassed dragging my luggage on the streets. It was a quiet afternoon and the wheels of my bag was just shouting very loud. I also walked 2 uphill streets (no biggie if you're not a heavy packer). The facilities are always cleaned, so I must say it is cleaner to stay here than some hotels. The other guests were respectful enough not to cause noise inside the dorm room. The AC is okay, not very cold. The space I stayed in is also bigger than I expect. I can sit properly on the bed (5'2) and not bump my head. There's also a small locker on the bedside. You can store your big luggage on their dedicated room (ground floor). They have plenty of toilets and shower rooms.

    “Traditional Ryokan Experience”

This is a good ryokan if you're looking for a traditional ryokan experience on a budget. Staff was super friendly and helpful with helping us get checked in and getting directions. Our room had A TON of storage space for our luggage, which was a welcomed surprise. There are several communal spaces, too, in the building, and the building is located in a nice, quiet area, which made it very relaxing to come back to each night. This is a traditional ryokan in an older building with sliding screens making up a lot of the outside walls, and despite being drafty and during the winter, our room stayed warm. The first floor rooms look out into an alley garden, and there is a larger, first floor garden that is viewable from the hallway, making for some welcomed scenery. Overall, a very good stay. It is located right in the middle of Gion down the street from Yasaka shrine, and it is a very scenic and short walk to Kiyomizudera and several other shopping streets, temples, and restaurants in the area. If you have large luggage, however, I recommend taking a taxi there because the area is quite hilly, and it is a couple blocks away from the bus stop. It's easily and enjoyably walkable, but carting heavy luggage was a bit challenging.
