“Great private big5 safari lodge”
We just finished three nights stay there, my wife and I, September 25-28. It is a small lodge, and relatively small property, but that’s its appeal. The room was very nice, I would say a typical Safari lodge. We stayed in the honeymoon suite and had a great view of the river and a private plunge pool, we did not use it because it was a bit cool. I would say the highlight is, of course the game drives, and we consistently saw the big four with very close and personal sightings of rhinos, elephants, and lions thanks to our great guide Kyle (Fritz )and Zak are amazing tracker. They were so much fun. We were with another couple for all of the game drives so it was quite pleasant to be out for the three hour drives each time. We stopped for sundowners in the evening and hot chocolate/coffee and biscuits during the morning game drive. The property is small, supposedly big five, but leopards are elusive, and we did not see any, again, not for lack of trying, but the overall intimacy of the property is it’s appeal. Sadly, we heard that there’s been some fences put up and property around them closing them in and possibly them losing their ability to still call it a big five reserve, it sounds like there’s some politics with the local owners and the current owner of Amakhosi. It would be sad to lose such a intimate big five reserve, and we had a great time, the food was fantastic. The staff makes the place run and is very pleasant. We’ve even had a outdoor show one night, with barbecue that ended up being under the roof because of weather. Overall, it was a great stay, would recommend it, but there may be changes coming in January. I get it would be sad, a lot of the staff have been there 15+ years so this really affects their livelihoods and I certainly wish them the best and hope cooler heads prevail, and it continues to operate as is.
