Me and my wife had a lengthy debate on where to go on the Labour Day weekend. Pangkor Island Beach Resort was one of our last choices as all of the other locations were fully booked.
We arrived by boat from Lumut. There was a hotel booth at the ferry terminal where our luggage was checked in and rooms confirmed. The ride was short and smooth despite the age of the vessel.
Once we arrive, we were greeted by the hotel band and shown to our room. Our luggage came soon after. So far so good.
We were put in the Pacific Wing, which according to online reviews, were not as bad as the Garden Wing. We were wrong. The room has definitely seen better days. All wooden furniture and fittings are in bad shape. There was a very 'eighties' feel in terms of the overall feel of the room.
The beach was nice. The sand is not as white and the water not as clear as we were used to but this is normal for West-coast beaches. The hotel lawn was well-kept and there were lots of activities to do. The Hornbills were a nice addition and my son loved them.
We ate in for dinners which cost around RM70 per head and was really disappointed. The breakfast buffet wasn't so good either. Their F&B team really needs to get their act together.
The staff were very friendly and everyone we met tried to make our stay a great experience. But they cannot do much with the state of the property and delivery system. Their management must wake up and realize that they need to upgrade. They also need to look at other more contemporary hotels to see what kind of experiences hotel guests are expecting.
All in all, PIBR has a common trait shared by most Malaysian hotels i.e. excellent right after they were built but quickly gets frozen in time or deteriorate due to bad maintenance culture.
That being said, the location and staff attitude did cover up for the other things that they lack so we ended up having a decent short getaway after all.
